The activation sign was installed by Cormac. Following a review of the Hounster Hill Feasibility Study and consultation, Cornwall Council agreed to cover the costs of the signage.
Information received from Cornwall Council’s Programme Development and Delivery Lead;
‘There is a uni-directional sensor within the narrow section, which will pick up vehicles travelling east/down the hill only. Vehicles travelling west/up the hill won’t trigger the sign, which is deliberate as vehicles may otherwise be waiting when they don’t need to.
When a single vehicle travelling down the hill triggers the sensor, the sign will flash for a number of seconds to inform drivers there is a vehicle approaching. That timing can be tweaked if needed, but it was checked a few times so is hopefully okay. I can’t recall the exact number of seconds.
When there is more than one vehicle travelling down the hill, the sensor will be triggered multiple times. The sign will therefore flash until the last vehicle has gone through. It resets/restarts the timer for every vehicle.
The sign is advisory only, so drivers still have to take care. The sensor may not pick up cyclists for example.
As it is advisory, some drivers may also ignore the flashing sign, especially if they’ve been waiting a while over the busier summer months for example.’
